Manitobans will once again have an opportunity to nominate a big, interesting or unique looking tree in their community. The Amazing tree quest, a free competition opened to all Manitobans, has returned for another summer.

"We sort of coordinated things with a Manitoba Forestry Association and Rivers West," said Manitoba Trails President Wayne Arseny.  "We have created a competition of individuals in different communities identifying what they are finding to be their biggest trees in their own area.  It isn't a competition of who has got the biggest tree in Canada or Manitoba, if you have big or unique tree in your town we want you to be able to identify it and let that tree be an attraction for your community."

Arseny noted there are plenty of big trees in the province including the cottonwoods in Morden and Portage La Prairie.

Currently the biggest tree in Manitoba is located in Emerson measuring 28 feet 6 inches in circumference.

Meanwhile, Trails Manitoba is looking for a student to bike from border to border.

The Trails auditor will bike the 1,500 km Trans Canada trail with a GPS to create a map of exactly where the trail is located.

Arseny listed some qualification required for the ideal candidate.

"We really haven't set too many.  You have to be in physically good condition and be able to use a GPS machine because there is some technical skills and exactly where you pedal is what is going to be showing on the computer so we want the route to be accurate where the trail is."

Arseny added they would like someone who is an avid biker and is familiar with mapping.

The auditor will also note where signs are missing and where attractions are located along the trail.
