For many in southern Manitoba, an aphid infestation has caused significant damage to gardens around the region.

Aphids are tiny sap-sucking insects that cause destruction to a variety of plants, especially when left to multiply without windy conditions, high temperatures, or bouts of precipitation which limit their spread.

Golden West's Lawn and Garden Journal Host Duayne Friesen said there are many ways to deal with the insects, including by purchasing lady bugs or praying mantises from local garden centres, or through more traditional methods, such as botanical-based mixes and insecticidal soaps.

Friesen noted it is important to keep in mind that insecticidal soap can cause irritation if directly exposed to skin. If none of these options are available, directly rinsing the affected plants with soap is also a reliable option.
