The Canadian Cancer Society is spreading the word of sun safety, now that the warmer temperatures have arrived.

Spokesperson Tami Thiessen says when checking the weather report, if  you see anything higher than a UV index of 3, sunscreen is needed. Thiessen adds, sunscreen should be SPF 30 or higher and needs to be reapplied every 2 hours. It doesn't matter if your dark skinned or light skinned, Thiessen shares UV rays can do damage either way. She adds, people should not be fooled by a cloudy day, the UV rays can still get through the clouds, as well as car windows and home windows. So she says, people who spend a lot of time driving in particular, should be wearing sunscreen as well, even though they're not technically outside.

Thiessen has been visiting schools recently, handing out Sun Sense bracelets.

"(The bracelets) have a series of clear beads but when you go outside and the UV index is high, those clear beads will immediately turn to purple," explains Thiessen. "The darker the purple, the more dangerous the UV rays are. If they go outside, they see the beads changing colour, they need to go back inside and ask mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, daycare worker or whomever, 'I need a hat, I need sunscreen, I need sunglasses, I need all these ways of protecting myself against the dangerous UV rays."

Thiessen will also be handing out the Sun Sense bracelets at community events such as both the Winkler and Morden Teddy Bear Picnics.
