2016's upon us, and Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen's looking at the new year with some concerns.

With the change in government last October, she realizes campaign promises have to be honoured, but stresses if circumstances change, government has to change with them.

"The threat of ISIS, I'm thinking of the large number of refugees they want to bring in. I hope that they're ensuring there's a safe process in place -- we'll see how that goes. And then fiscally, I know here in the riding of Portage-Lisgar people and industry in this riding understand that government debt and increased deficit is not a good thing, in terms of our economy."

She's especially interested in how this riding will fare when it comes to government programs.

"It's going to see how the new government rolls out and continues with the Building Canada Plan that we had started. We were able to get a lot of funding into the riding of Portage-Lisgar throughout the riding, and we were working together on future projects. So I'm going to be working very hard to make sure that this riding gets their fair share under the new Liberal government."

Bergen will also monitor the Liberals' proposed carbon tax to deal with climate change.

"I'm going to be watching this very, very carefully to ensure that it would be revenue-neutral. I don't know that the evidence is there that a carbon tax reduces emissions, so I'm going to be looking for the evidence from this government. And then I'd like to see that this carbon tax is not just a way for a government that wants to spend a lot of money to fill their coffers."
