Westman Immigrant Services (WIS) has been selected to participate in the federal government's Resettlement Assistance Program.

The Brandon Agency will become the third resettlement centre in the province, the first outside of Winnipeg.

Wendy Peterson works for WIS as the Manager of the Resettlement Assistance Program.

She says they'll now be working with government sponsored refugees, including but not limited to, those coming from Syria.

"Our role in this process is, we actually receive the refugees. So that means we go to the airport we great them, we bring them back to the transitional housing that we have setup here in Brandon."

Peterson adds they'll also begin to work on refugee settlement plans and teach Canadian life skills.

She notes as of June 1, 2016 they were told to expect a minimum of 140 individuals over the next nine to ten months.

Westman Immigrant Services has also provided assistance to privately sponsored refugees in the Brandon area.
