An Innovation Zone will soon become a reality at Brandon University thanks to federal funding announced Thursday.

The federal government has earmarked $47,000 to purchase 3D printing equipment, including microphones and related software, allowing innovators in Westman to produce prototypes locally.

“Our government is proud to support new opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs, and innovators in Westman,” said Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire. “Through this investment, users will be able to develop product concepts, create prototypes, and bring new products to market so that we can continue to create jobs and economic growth.”

The innovation zone will provide support to entrepreneurs, local businesses and students to increase the adoption of new technologies, as well as the development and commercialization of new products.

“The funding from Government of Canada in support of the acquisition of 3D printing technologies for the university will permit us to establish a community innovation centre that is open to business and industry innovators across the region,” said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President and Vice-Chancellor of Brandon University. “The investment announced today supports Brandon University in being a catalyst for growth and innovation across the southwestern Manitoba region.”

Funding was provided through Western Economic Diversification.
