The Killarney Lake Action Committee is gearing up for April 1st to open up the aeration bubbler heads throughout the entire field. This will cause ice to soften and break up quickly in those areas, and create a larger area of open water.

Clarence Sawatzky is co-chair of the Aeration Project. He says they are watching the temperatures and the quality of ice as the end of March gets closer.

“Right now the lake is sitting with a really healthy ice and snow cover,” he explains. “My guess is that it’s about 30“of ice. However, with the spring coming and warm weather in the forecast, those conditions could deteriorate quickly.”

Generally, ice fishing closes at the end of March and ice-fishing shacks are to be removed by then as well.

“So, by April 1st we’d like to pull all the (safety) signage and switch compressors and go into the summer aeration mode,” says Sawatzky. “Although, if the ice starts to deteriorate prior to April 1, we’re not going to risk our own safety in removing signage by waiting till it’s too late.”

“We are going to pull the signs off while it is still safe to do so,” he says.

“We would strongly encourage people to stay away from that aeration area. With fishing season closed by then, there’s really no need for anyone to be out there, other than potentially, the snowmobilers. So, we encourage them to be careful.”
