The community of Clearwater is preparing to host their annual Canada day baseball tournament.

The event, which will feature around 4 dozen teams, celebrates 65 years this season.

"The entries this year are not as large as we've expected other years," explained drawmaster Jackie Johnson.  "Being in the long weekend, people do have a few other plans.  When it's during the week we have the monopoly, there is nothing else conflicting so they can come to the tournament."

Johnson noted unfortunately Softball Manitoba Provincials are being held this weekend, causing the number of girl's team entries to be lower than usual.

She shared the event continues to be an important celebration for the community.

"It's great," stated Johnson.  "It's our 65th year and we have only 65 people living in the town of Clearwater.  We come together, young and old, middle years, everybody pitches in to help. They had a big work day in the park the other day.  There was lots of green mowers mowing like crazy to get it ready.  It is also very prideful for us to host the tournament."

Johnson added the event is great for coming out to visit with friends and watch some baseball.

Meanwhile, Johnson hopes they can keep the tournament going into the future.

Both guys and girls teams from Mosquito to Senior baseball will take the field starting Friday morning.
