The top cowboys in Manitoba are competing this weekend in Carman. The 20th annual Heartland Rodeo Association Finals are already underway and President Rod Manchester says the top competitors will compete in their respective events this weekend.

"This is the best of the best that've worked hard all summer, and drove a lot of miles over the summer to compete for this coming weekend to win the championship."

Team roping got underway Friday and other events this weekend include bareback, tie-down roping, goat tying, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, saddle bronc, barrel racing, team roping and bull riding.

"They'll compete for...a Season Leader championship and also there will be buckles up for a Finals Champion, so whoever does the best over the two days and whoever's done the best over the season."

Also up for grabs this weekend are the Cowboy of the Year and Cowgirl of the Year awards. "(They) are given to people who really put their heart and soul into making rodeo successful throughout the province and really put a strong effort in making sure rodeo is kept alive in Manitoba," explains Manchester.

This being the 20th anniversary rodeo finals, Manchester admits the sport has had its ups and downs over the years and says rodeos aren't like they used to be. That being said, he adds the Association does its best to work with local committees and make rodeo events successful.

"It is an ongoing challenge for sure, it's not easy but if you love something and your committed to it, you'll work hard to make sure it'll thrive."

A special theme accompanies this year's Finals. Manchester explains where the Association came up with 20 Shades of Blue.

Funds raised through the sale of the scarves will benefit Terry's family as well as the Heartland Rodeo Association.
