There's still a lot of reaction to US President Donald Trump's Afghanistan strategy speech on Monday night.

Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman MP James Bezan is the Conservative defence critic in the House of Commons, and understands the United States' concern about security in that country. He said Canada's response to being a part of any military activity is up to the Liberal government.

"To make the decision on whether or not Canada should participate again in any military efforts in Afghanistan," he said, "And until we know what President Trump has in mind, we will have to wait and see, even as the opposition, what that ask is."

Bezan said the strategy is a departure from previous American policy in the region.

"The situation has changed ... Defence Secretary Mattis must see it as a threat to the United States, and her allies. ISIS, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban trying to re-establish their caliphate within Afghanistan, and the United States is definitely making policy decisions based upon the threat that has," he said.

Bezan says the Conservatives will base their decisions on what the "hard-ask" is from the US, and the Trudeau government's response.
