Frustration is mounting as civic officials in Deloraine wait for the community's new water treatment plant to open.

A number of issues have popped up over the past several months and delayed the plant's opening. “As of right now we are about seven months behind schedule and I'm not sure when ther plant will open for sure” said Deloraine-Winchester Reeve Gord Weidenhamer.

The reeve says the project has really hit some snags and right now the delay is being caused by an electrical issue. “They are paying penalties and we are way behind the eight ball in getting it open and we wanted it up and running months and months ago.”

Weidenhamer says it is tough to get answers from some of the people involved and he says council is patiently waiting and hope to have the water plant opened sooner rather than later.

Deloraine's existing water plant was built decades ago and council felt the plant needed to be replaced. “I certainly hope by the end of April this plant is working but we will have to wait and see.”

The $6.9 million water plant is being cost shared by the municipality and federal and provincial governments.

“The existing plant is still in use and will be until we get the new plant open” said Weidenhamer.
