Construction season continues now during the summer months and Manitoba Infrastructure is cautioning motorists to drive safely when passing construction crews.

Herb Mahood is the Regional Director for Manitoba Infrastructure for Southwest Manitoba.

He says two major roadways under construction over the next few months include Provincial Road 251 and portions of Highway 10.

PR 251 runs from Highway 21 through Waskada and west to Lyleton.  Mahood says portions of 251 are in serious need of repair.

“That’s a key link between Highway 21 and Waskada and we’re reconstructing the surface of that road.  It was very narrow and in very bad shape.  It was the number one priority for the RM’s of the area as well as for the oil industry.  We’re grinding up the surface and we’re laying it back down and putting bituminous pavement on top, as well as widening the road a bit.”

Construction will also include reconstructing Highway #10 through Boissevain.  Three major projects on Highways #16 north of Brandon to Clear Lake will be slowing down the tourist traffic to Riding Mountain Provincial Park.

As well, they are working on some smaller projects in Brandon, and the curves south of Minnedosa.

When driving through a construction zone, the rule of thumb is expect the unexpected.  Speed limits are often slower and traffic may be diverted.  Workers and equipment may be working on or near the road, and drivers are reminded to slow down, be patient, and give plenty of room.
