The Manager of the province's fire program is optimistic they will be able to protect all cottages at Caddy Lake in the Whiteshell. Gary Friesen says a forest fire is now about two kilometres away.

"So it is pretty close and the winds are from the southeast so it's one of those situations that's very fluid. But, right now, the value protection, the sprinkler systems and everything else, are being put into place and hopefully that will protect everyone."

He says 50 cottages along the southeast shore of Caddy Lake have been evacuated as a precaution. Friesen says the wind is currently pushing the fire away from the cottages but notes the situation is very fluid and could change at any time, depending on wind and weather.

Further north, Friesen says Wallace Lake, east of Bissett, has been evacuated and sprinkler systems are being put atop cottages to try and protect them.
He adds, at Wallace Lake, the fire is still about seven kilometres away.

Meanwhile, with the current forest fires happening in the Whiteshell region, the Office of the Fire Commissioner has put out a call to fire chiefs in the province for assistance.
