Drivers are encouraged to be extra careful on the roads this weekend.

Manitoba Public Insurance spokesperson Brian Smiley explains statistics show Fridays are the worst day for fatalities and injuries heading into a long weekend.

"There's certainly added importance to motorists out there to be cautious and drive responsibly," he says. "Just do a self-evaluation of your driving behaviour if you need to adjust it."

While increased traffic is one cause for concern, Smiley notes there's also additional danger while driving at this time of year. He notes it's rutting season, during which time deer becoming more transient, moving from area to area and crossing roadways, increasing the chance of collision. If an animal does impede your path, Smiley says do not swerve.

"If you swerve you have a risk of going into on-coming traffic, leaving the roadway, rolling your vehicle," Smiley says. "So apply your brakes, if you have to go through the animal."

He says taking you time, remaining undistracted while driving, and not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are just some of the ways to keep yourself and others safe on the road.
