Planning continues for a new fire hall in Killarney.

The existing fire hall is located next to the civic centre along the community’s main street. Fire Chief Troy Cuvelier says a move to a new location will a good for the fire department.

“We slated to start building if everything is in place this April. The ground work is coming together very well and it has been approved by council. The funding is in place and it should go to tender following council’s next meeting.”

The land at the corner of Broadway and South Railway has been purchased, soil tests are done and the land has been rezoned.

Cuvelier says a new fire hall will be a real benefit to the department. “We need the facility for room for one thing and we want to get off of main street because it has always been a bit of a hazardous with the emergency vehicles rolling into the two lanes along main street. The bigger hall will also allow more room for training.”

The project will cost about $1 million and Cuvelier says the community has really throw its support behind the fire hall.

“We’ve done lots of dun raising and will continue to do so. We’ve picked up support from the Killarney Foundation and the Kinsmen Club made a donation of $150,000. Our next major fund raising event will be Bobbing For Brian an indoor fishing derby that will take place at the Shamrock Centre on February 16th.”
