Today Christians around the world are marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

It's believed that Jesus was crucified on this day, around 3pm, along with two other thieves.

Reverend Melanie Kauppila, of Altona United Church, says the day can have a broad range of understandings, but is traditionally seen as the understanding of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

She notes Good Friday, which happens towards the end of the Holy Week, is a time for reflection.

“Good Friday does have those somber tones because we come face to face with mortality,” explained Kauppila. “The mortality of Jesus; the mortality of our own personhood. We come face to face with death at the hands of hatred, at the hands of fear.”

She adds that there is such a great dialogue that's possible surrounding Good Friday, with different theologies of what the crucifixion means.
