Several health facilities in the Prairie Mountain Health region will be getting some upgrades thanks to provincial support.

The Manitoba government has approved more than 120 projects across the province with funding totalling nearly $30 million to ensure health-care facilities are properly maintained.

“We actually have a fair amount of work that was approved. It’s great to see these approvals come through. The way it works is we actually submit to Manitoba Health our greatest priorities within the region and they look at the list and then get back to us with what has been approved” said Brian Schoonbaert vice president of finance and support services with Prairie Mountain Health.

Safety and security projects do not require a community contribution. Project requests are submitted each year by the regional health authorities, CancerCare Manitoba, Diagnostic Services Manitoba, and the Addictions Foundation.

This year, there are 44 projects estimated to cost more than $150,000 each for a total of $21.8 million. An additional $6.8 million will address 80 projects estimated to cost less than $150,000. The remaining $1.4 million will be held in reserve in case of any emergent project needs.

“The nice thing about these safety and security projects is the province pay for the work and we don’t need to come up with any support at the local level.”

Other projects that will begin later this year include the installation of sprinkler systems, upgrades to fire safety equipment and roof replacements at sites across Manitoba.

“The work is expected to be completed sometime in the 2019” said Schoonbaert.
