Algae blooms weren't a huge problem for Killarney Lake during the summer of 2015.

For more than a decade the community has been dealing with algae problems that have blanketed the water and kept beach goers from coming to the lake.

Killarney-Turtle Mountain Mayor Rick Pauls is pleased to finally have a "fairly normal" summer at the lake.

"Mother nature really helped us out this year and it was our best year in more than a decade. The water clear more days than not and with the nice weather we actually saw our beach numbers rise in 2015, it was a terrific, terrific year for Killarney Lake."

Why the turn around in conditions is up for debate. Pauls says at the end of the day it is anyones guess.

"Some people feel the heavy smoke cover early in the summer the direct sunlight was hitting the lake to spur on the early algae blooms."

Pauls has been approached by area residents thanking him for treating the lake to improve conditions and he says the simply was not the case.

Mayor Rick Pauls says research continues to find ways to improve the lake's condition and those studies will be completed in one more year.

"This lake is very important to our town because it's a great recreation facility and generates huge economic revenues" said Pauls.
