The Town of Killarney is hosting the upcoming Manitoba 55-Plus Summer Games in June, and organizers have begun to fill the roles of committee heads as the 3-day competition takes shape for June 13-15, 2017.

Bob Moore co-chairs the event with Rob MacTavish.  Moore says they have most every position filled to head the various 24 events, as well as the 24 sub-committees.  However, they are struggling to find people to chair those games that are not typically “sports-oriented”.

Moore says Killarney is fortunate to be the only community outside of Winnipeg to host the 55-Plus Summer Games three times, 2010 being the last time Moore co-chaired the event.  Now at 72, he’s excited to be co-chairing once again. He says they are expecting anywhere between 1000 to 1500 people to venture to Killarney during the event, and the committee is looking at the various options to house that many people; billeting visitors to Killarney’s residents’ homes being one of them.

The total budget for the Games is expected to be some $57,000.  Moore adds they have received great support from the Municipality of Killarney and the Killarney Foundation, as well as from one of their main sponsors, Manitoba Lotteries.

Positions are still needed to be filled and Moore encourages anyone who is willing to be part of the committee that organizes board/card games to contact himself at 204-523-2059 , Rob MacTavish or Brian LePoudre at the Shamrock Centre by calling 204-523-8920 or emailing Brian at krec@mymts.net.

Bob Moore sums it up nicely, “We always say there’s no other place like Killarney and we’re hoping to showcase it to the rest of Manitoba, to show people our restaurants and our parks and our splash park, and also the new facilities we have at the Ag Grounds.  We have a lot to showcase in Killarney and we just hope that people will come and enjoy us!”
