The federal Liberals have announced the long-form census, which was scrapped by the Conservatives, is being made mandatory again.

Wilf Falk is Manitoba’s Chief Statistician.

He says this is good news because the information provided by the National Household Survey, which replaced the long-form census in 2011, didn't get as high a response rate.

Falk says in some cases the response rate was so low, the information it provided was ignored.

Falk expects the new census won't take as long to fill out, because some of the answers, such as income, can be found from other federal departments.

He thinks Stats Canada should launch an information campaign to explain why the additional data being gathered matters to ordinary Canadians.
