The Pine Creek School Division recently finished safety upgrades for MacGregor Collegiate's industrial arts shop. Pine Creek School Division Superintendent Bruce Lyons says safety is always a priority.

"Recently the Board made a decision to be proactive about shop safety upgrades for industrial arts workshops in the division, and decided to allocate resources towards improvement to the floor plan, to the shop's equipment, with the intent of bringing the entire shop to higher standards of safety," says Lyons.

Lyons notes after a safety audit was completed last year by their safety officer, resources were then allocated to complete the upgrades.

"A more orderly and efficient floor plan. The floor was repainted. There were safety areas put down with black and yellow banded tape around the power equipment. Pretty significant grip tape was put into the work areas. There's an addition of some other safety equipment such as knee-jerk reaction cut off switches, there's also new power outage protection," Lyons says.

Lyons says the upgrades were finished and ready for the start of the school year.

He adds the Division's also considering similar upgrades at William Morton Collegiate Institute in their metal shop. He says the same safety audit will take place to make sure it's as safe as possible.
