Out of the ten artists chosen from across Canada, only one Manitoban was selected for the 2016 Canadian Wilderness Artists Residency.

Carly Dow, from Riding Mountain National Park, plans on sparking the next stage of her artistic career, as she heads across Yukon to experience the remote Canadian wilderness this summer.

"We start off in Whitehorse, getting ready and preparing for the canoe trip and meeting local artist and doing studio tours," Dow explains. "Then we embark on this canoe journey and we end up in Dawson City for the Riverside Art Festival. I'll be doing a performance at this festival. then we head back to Whitehorse and that's the end of it."

Dow explains as a resident of Riding Mountain National Park, nature is a big influence in her life and inspires a lot of her work.

"I have a piece of property that i bought myself a couple years ago," Dow says. "Just South of the border of Riding Mountain National Park, so I spend most of my time with the birds, the bears and the trees and all of these things that are my closest neighbors. It's just very much a part of my daily life."

She notes that the point of this trip is based around art and the creation of art, and is looking forward to being inspired on this month long trip.

"I'll have a chance to work on new material for my next album and some writing and poetry and building up my next repertoire of songs," she says. "There's a great combination of both nature and art. everything I like rolled into one."

The residency takes place July 22 to August 14.
