The week-long Vacation Bible School program was held again this year in Killarney.

This year's theme was Son Castle Fair, and people dressed up in medieval costume.

Theresa Wiebe, official coordinator for the event, says the caste theme is based around the idea that God's protection is like a fortress.

The theme is based on a scripture verse which compares God to a place of refuge.

Wiebe explained the message for the kids is they always have someone to turn to.

“We wanted to teach them that they can run to God, and God is their Castle, God is is their fortress, God is their strong-tower,” she said.

The centres included a king's court for stories, a castle courtyard for indoor activities, the minstrel hall for singing, the castle workshop for crafts, and the village green where games took place.

Wiebe said that the castle theme was also a metaphor for the armour God can provide.

“We talked about the different parts of the armour that God has given to us. The helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, the sword of the spirit which is the word of God – the Bible, the breast-plate of righteousness, and the belt of truth, and our feet fitted and ready to go and tell others about the good news.”

Her son, who is a pastor in Utah, brought a group of youth from his church to attend VBS and experience Manitoba farm life.

Wiebe said some of the kids from Utah helped with the event last year. This year they had a great time and went to different farms in the area as part of their trip.

A total of 110 children attended the VBS program this year, said Wiebe.
