Manitoba Public insurance has requested a two percent rate hike for most vehicles.

If approved, rate payers would see an average increase of 17 dollars per year starting in March 2017.

Media Relations Coordinator, Brian Smiley explained a rise in hail damage is a main reason for the proposal.

"Last year the corporation opened 13,000 hail claims compared to only 4,000 in 2014.  That translates into $50,000,000 over our projected forecast.  Last year's payout was $125,000,000 compared the past five year average of $74,000,000."

Smiley noted hail seems to have become a common problem in the Province; adding, last week's hail storm around Winkler and Morden has brought in close to 1,000 claims so far.

Meanwhile, motorcycle rates continue to decrease.

"Good news for motorcycle owners again they are going to see a decrease," stated Smiley.  "This year the corporation has requested a 1.7 (percent) overall decrease.  Again, if approved about 12,000 motorcycle owners will receive a decrease if it is approved.   We should also mention that over the last five years motorcycle rates have decreased nearly 20 percent."

He added the reduction in rate costs is thanks to a decrease in motorcycle collisions in recent years.

The Public Utilities Board will be making the final decision whether to allow the rate changes.
