While some Manitoban communities are facing challenges when it comes to doctor recruitment and retention, Neepawa's a different story.

Mayor Adrian de Groot says they discussed the work of the Doctor Recruitment and Clinic Committees at their most recent meeting, outlining they currently have a full compliment of doctors on staff at their clinic. However, he notes those committees aren't taking a rest, citing discussions regarding the clinic's expansion.

"It's good news, there's a lot of interest. The recruitment team is very important to our community, and that's not only Neepawa but the surrounding communities. It's exciting news to hear that there's the possibility of expanding the clinic."

While those discussions are still in the early stages, de Groot says it shows the town is doing the right things when it comes to bringing doctors into the community. He says there are likely several factors that are leading to their success.

"We've got a well equipped hospital, that physicians certainly appreciate. We also have a very supportive community. We've got the clinic committee that's constantly fundraising, the community foundation that's supplying resources to buy equipment and specialized things for doctors."

He notes they're also seeing an influx of medical students interested in conducting their practicum in the community.
