A call for Manitobans to nominate women who have followed in Nellie McClung's footsteps is being put out by the Nellie McClung Foundation.

Nellie McClung Foundation's Lila Goodspeed says The ‘Nellies’ will salute the contributions women in this province have made to social justice, the arts, human rights and the promotion of democracy, following in the footsteps of Nellie McClung.

"Nellie McClung has left a huge legacy with the many, many things she has done," shared Goodspeed. "So we thought, there are many present day Nellies in our midst and we wanted to recognize them with an award. We're coming up to the 100th anniversary of the vote for woman, and so we thought, 'what can we do to commemorate that wonderful celebration?' Recognize woman who emulate what she's done."

The launch of the ‘Nellies’, marks the beginning of a series of celebrations leading up to the 100th anniversary of Manitoba women achieving the right to vote, added Goodspeed. There will be 5 urban and 5 rural award recipients, and Goodspeed says the nominations do not all have to be for individuals. If there is a group of woman who people feel are contributing to Social Justice, the Arts and Democracy, they will definitely be in the running to receive an award.

The awards will be handed out January 28th, 2016 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg. On that date, it will have been 100 years since the legislation was passed granting Manitoba women the right to vote in Provincial elections.
