A perfect day for Track and Field was Tuesday for the Killarney School Middle Years students.

Grades 5 to 8’s competed throughout the day, vying for fastest runner and highest jumper, to go on to the divisional track meet to be held at Boissevain School this coming Friday.

Phys Ed Instructor, Stephanie Outhwaite, says the students had a great day with a few school records being broken.

Stephanie Outhwaite, says she loves the track season. Husband, Terrill Outhwaite, also teaches Phys Ed at the Killarney School.  Their love for the sport started way back at the University of Manitoba where they both competed in Track competitions. “We really believe in the sport and gives so many kids great opportunities.  We hope the sport continues growing here in Killarney.”  Outhwaite shares that she’s looking forward to one day having all track and field events on a new rubberized track that the Turtle Mountain School Division is raising money for.

The Turtle Mountain School Division is fund-raising for a new 400 meter running track that will be the first of its kind in this division. The 4-lane oval track will have a rubberized asphalt surface and is to be built on the Killarney School grounds.  The Turtle Mountain School Division has received grants from both the Killarney Foundation and the Richardson Foundation, and more grant money has been applied for from various organizations.

Recently, athletes from the division experienced running on such a rubberized running track during the Milk Provincial Track and Field Championships at the Sportplex in Brandon last weekend. Outhwaite notes how the 13 Killarney School athletes performed exceptionally well and attributes some of the success to adrenaline, encouragement, but also to the professional running track.

Stephanie Outhwaite has been teaching at Killarney School for 10 years, but has been involved in coaching athletes in Track and Field events for over 20 years.  Having had a High School coach who inspired her to achieve excellence in track competition, she wants to inspire her students to achieve their ultimate best as well.
