Pelican Lake is going to be a lot cleaner thanks to some federal funding.

A grant of $46,500 was announced through the government's Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program.

The money will be used to purchase a new aerator, which will improve water quality and fish habitat.

“Countless anglers from across Westman all have a story about their luck at Pelican Lake,” said Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire. “Pelican Lake is not only well used by local anglers, but it’s great for the region’s economy as it brings tourists and fishing enthusiasts from across the province. I am pleased our Government is partnering with local anglers to improve the fishing habitat so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

A committee looking after the lake's cleanliness believes the aerator will help the lake take a big step forward in improving its health.

Trevor Maguire, the project lead from the Healthy Lake Committee said, “Receiving this grant is a huge step forward to improving the health of Pelican Lake. A healthy lake benefits the recreational fishery, the people that use the lake and the businesses that support the lake and surrounding area, everyone wins.”

A small aeration system was first installed into Pelican Lake in 2013 which has resulted in noticeable improvement to the lake's water quality followed afterward.
