The Prairie Spirit School Division is engaging local residents and stakeholders to make their voices heard on the Province's Education Review.

While not opposed to the idea of amalgamating school divisions, PRSS Chair Jan McIntyre says the focus needs to remain on improving education.

"We want to do what's best for students and if they can prove to us there's an educational benefit then we're open to discussing it."

Based on previous amalgamations in 2000 and 2002, McIntyre says there were no cost savings, but notes there were increased efficiencies in operation and improved levels of support for teachers in terms of curriculum and technology.

However, McIntyre says school boards continue to provide more input from parents on what's taking place in their local schools.

"A larger amalgamation does limit that. I think with the size we have right now we do have good community representation. As you get larger it becomes less and less," she says. "That's a huge issue for communities."

McIntyre notes a comprehensive educational review has not occurred in many years and should look for ways to enhance learning rather than cutting costs.

"We believe money spent on education is an investment rather than an expense line."
