Scouting is key in preventing the spread of plant viruses like Cucumber Mosaic.

Host of the Lawn and Garden Journal on the Goldenwest network, Duayne Friesen, hasn't heard too much about the virus yet but said that the word 'mosaic' would be the key in detecting it.

"The leaf on most plants will become mottled. So you will see a yellowing or a speckling of the leaf between the yellow and green, or in some cases it might turn out to be striping along the leaf."

He says you can even get fruit that turns white.

Friesen added that Mosaic viruses go much more beyond the cucumber virus with the most dreaded being the Tobacco Mosaic Virus. "It's a big family of viruses."

He explained that it can sweep through a garden and put potato plants, tomatoes and Petunia flowers at risk.

As with most all agriculture viruses, Mosaic viruses is untreatable and the only way to get rid of it is to remove the affected plant. Friesen added however, most plants sold at a greenhouse are already tested and disease-free.

Friesen said that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to scout your garden or fields on a regular basis.
