Lots of snow in later January and early February has snowmobiles out on the trails in Western Manitoba.

The Southwest Snow Trackers maintain about 350 kilometres of trail system that runs in the Souris, Elgin, Hartney, Deloraine, Turtle Mountain Park and Boissevain areas.

Club President Gord Weidenhamer says it’s nice to finally have a fairly normal winter with lots of snow for people to enjoy.

“Snow conditions are as close to perfect because of the close to 12 inches of snow that has hit the region recently. The wind hasn’t caused too many problems and the snowfall has left us with an excellent base for the trail that’s for sure.”

Weidenhamer says the east side of the rail system is the only part left to be groomed and he says that should be completed within a week.

“The extreme cold is having an impact on the number of people heading out and it probably keeps people off the trails as much as a lack of snow. When it’s -40 or even -50 that cold really cuts through even when you layer up.”
