A culinary arts program is now part of the classes being offered at schools in the Southwest Horizon School Division.

Superintendent Carolyn Cory said the program took about three years to put together for the schools. “We held stakeholder meetings and surveys and it was clear people wanted our students to have access to a culinary arts program.”

The division put together portable pods to teach the course. “We will have the culinary arts program offered at different grades in different schools. Some schools will offer the course in middle years and others are focusing on Grades 9 and 10” said Cory.

The division is still waiting for some of the equipment needed to teach the course. Cory anticipates students will be cooking by the end of this month.

“I'm not an expert on the curriculum but the program we offer focuses on safety in the kitchen, nutrition and then get into the basics of providing themselves a meal for when they leave home.”

The program is being funded by the division and Cory added schools took steps to make sure staffing was in place for the program.

So far there has been a lot of interest in the new culinary arts program in the Southwest Horizon School Division.
