The Brandon and Area Suicide Prevention Implementation Network (SPIN) is looking for nominations of individuals and organizations to acknowledge and recognize their efforts in making the area suicide-safer.

SPIN Committee Member Janet Smith explains what the annual awards are all about.

“Every year our SPIN committee invites people to come together on World Suicide Prevention Day and we do that to recognize people in our community who have helped to build both resilient, healthy individuals and communities - to support those who are struggling with living. And also to comfort and care for those who have been bereaved by suicide.”

Smith says suicide is a major health risk factor around the world, noting that stats indicate that there is a suicide every second day in Manitoba.

SPIN is recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day September 9 at an event being held at the Prairie Oasis Senior Centre in Brandon.

More information on the SPIN awards can be found at spinbrandon.ca.

The nomination deadline is August 14, 2015.
