A municipality in Western Manitoba is after the Province of Manitoba to find a fair and equitable way of dealing with tax portioning.
The RM of Grassland has a motion on the books that will be dealt with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities annual convention later this month in Brandon.
Councillor Ewen Mosby says an outside party has to get involved to keep the process as fair as possible.
“Recent assessment changes have created a huge shift away from all other property classes onto farm property and recent results affecting the 2018 reassessment promise more of the same and farm property owners are demanding remedial action. Councillors, urban and rural, would be affected personally by change versus status quo and therefore face a moral conflict of interest on the issue.”
Mosby says the tax load is shifting and something needs to be done.
“We call on the AMM to discourage local attempts at remedial action and redouble lobbying efforts aimed at an impartial and equitable resolution of tax portioning problems by the Province of Manitoba.”
Municipal leaders will meet in Brandon during the last week of November for the AMM Convention.
