Registration numbers for the Turtle Mountain School Division have been increasing over the past few years, with a projected number of students for the 2019-2020 school year reaching 1,050 in total.

Superintendent, Tim DeRuyck, says they use their January numbers to make that projection. Numbers for Kindergarten registration has come in much at par as last year's numbers.

Confirmed numbers for the Kindergarten classes in the division is 24 students in Boissevain School, 32 in Killarney School, and 4 in each of the Mayfair School, Minto School, Wellwood School and the Holmfield School.

"We almost always end up with more than that," explains DeRuyck. "We may get more registrations between now and the end of the (current school) year, and then over the summer as well."

DeRuyck explains that smaller graduating classes and a fairly consistent influx of Kindergarten students can account for some of that incline in total numbers.

"Our registration numbers have been pretty stable, but then our graduating classes have been somewhat smaller," he says.

"Killarney School, I believe, is having 24-25 graduates this year. So, when you have 24 or 25 going out, and you have 32 plus coming in, then that difference of course is an increase in enrollment."

Over last summer, TMSD saw a spike in the enrollment, adding 40 students to the September 2018-2019 student population, which was more than their projection number.

"We had to make some moves quite quickly to get some staffing in place for that extra enrollment," he adds. "So, we'll see what transpires over the course of this coming summer."
