Waskada's new arena is close to opening.

Volunteers and paid workers have been busy the past couple of years constructing the skating rink, curling club and fitness centre. “I think we might be able to turn on the ice plant the first week of November” said Building chairman Lyle Spence.

Spence added they still have a few finishing touches to complete in the kitchen and the complex should be ready to go for the winter season.

“We've been working hard to get the arena ready because once summer hits and the volunteers, most of the them farmers, are busy with their own work but things picked up in the fall.”

The Wasakda and area recreation centre will have two sheets of curling ice and Spence say local curlers will be busy with league play this winter. “We might even have some Deloraine curlers coming to play here as Deloraine works to get a new curling club built in that community” said Spence.

As for hockey Spence said they will have a bantam team playing some games out of the new area. There will also be lots of rec hockey and figure skating.

Total cost of the project will be just of $4 million.
