The Municipality of Westlake Gladstone saw a productive year for building permits issued.

"I was quite impressed with (the numbers)," says Mayor David Single. "We've issued something like 80 building permits for the year, and that's pretty substantial. Of course, a lot of them are fairly minor ones, but there are some major ones, too. There's something like eight new houses. They're not all finished by any means, but they started during the year. I'm really pleased with that."

Single says a few of the houses are being built by young people, which is exciting for the community. "I think it shows people have faith in our community. Like I said it's all over the municipality; Langruth, Plumas, Gladstone, rural areas, and Westbourne, too. When I say building permits we had the Parrish and Heimbecker (PNH) Elevator built last year. They don't show up because it's a provincial permit, but maybe what's driving this is the expansion of big businesses and small businesses. And that's what is keeping our young people here."

Single adds every time there's a new house built they have an assessment that increases the tax base.
