Some changes were made in the last council meeting of the Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone.

"We passed the third reading of a by-law which means that the next election, on October 24th, will only have six councillors in our municipality instead of the nine that we have now," explains Mayor David Single. "And we also had a resolution that we will not have wards. We will be having the elections at large."

Single says there are those who would agree councillors at large are a better plan, and those who would not. He personally says he thinks it's the best way to go. Single adds, if only one person ran in a ward, then that person is automatically chosen, whereas if another ward has three who run, with only one chosen, you could lose two good potential councillors.

He also says, while he's the mayor, he represents the entire Municipality, so asks why councillors shouldn't do the same. For those who think a councillor's required from one ward or another, he's from only one part of the municipality and feels he can represent it all, and so can councillors.

Single says the council was basically split on the decision. He says he was absent from the meeting so it came to a tie, but the choice to remain with the current wards was defeated.
