The first MS Bike Event in western Manitoba was held this past weekend in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.

About 55 riders hopped on their bikes for the event, which so far has raised over $18,000. The goal of the event was to raise $20,000.

Laura Flikweert is the Westman chapter manager for the MS Society of Canada.

She explains why it's important to raise money for the cause.

"Manitoba, especially Westman, is a hot spot for MS. Researchers are still trying to figure out why that is and so that's why the money that we raise at these events is so important because it is being invested in those types of research projects."

Flikweert says the money raised will be split 50-50 between research and local chapter support.

Donations can still be made at msbike.ca.
