Planning continues for a new fire hall in Killarney.

The existing hall next to the civic centre will give way to a new five bay fire hall at the corner of South Railway and Broadway.

“We are ready to go to tender and that will happen probably in the next three to four weeks and we hope to close tenders by mid March we’d like to have shovels in the group by mid April or mid May” said Killarney-Turtle Mountain Mayor Rick Pauls.

Plans are to have the new hall completed and in use by the end of October of this year. “It depends who gets the tender but we are talking about having a completion date and we are shooting for a completion date of October 1st.”

The project will cost about $1 million. Some of that money has already been invested in the land. Mayor Rick Pauls says they aren’t building a Cadillac but they are are building a highly functional building that will service the community’s needs. “We have a big fund raising drive on right now and the municipality is prepared to put $750,000 onto the taxes however it appears that number will be dropping significantly and the project will have a minimal impact on taxes.”

Pauls adds he is always proud of his community but he continues to be amazed at the support from people when projects like this come up. “We have to proud of out citizens and how they pull together for these worthwhile projects” said Pauls.

The existing fire hall will be renovated and become office space at the civic centre.
