Environment Canada says we can attribute the current heat wave to a phenomenon known as a heat dome.
Forecaster Dave Phillips explains it's a blanket of stifling heat and it's here for the long haul.
A heat dome is an unmoving high pressure area which pushes the jet stream north, keeping cooler or wetter weather out.
Phillips refers to it as a heat pump.
He notes there is a bit of relief ahead in the coming days but temperatures in the 30's will return next week.
Phillips adds the outlook through to the end of August is for above normal temperatures from coast-to-coast.
