The spring cattle run has come to a close for Allan Munroe, owner and manager Killarney Auction Mart.

Munroe said they had a good spring, but not as strong as last year.

"We sold an awful lot of cattle last fall because the prices were so strong, we had a very good run this spring as well," said Munroe.

He noted prices weren't as strong to start off the year.

"Prices were off a little bit in January, February, and dipped down into April. But, we have seen a recovery through May and June, which is a really nice way to end the season off, and gives us some optimism for fall."

Munroe was asked if there are many producers in the beef industry right now.

"The margins have been good, they've been very positive in the last number of years. We are seeing a shift in generations, there are some young guys coming up. We are seeing some guys getting out of the business as well."

He explained they want to stay competitive in the business.

"We're looking to expand our area a little bit more, trying to do a little better job, and keep our numbers up that way," said Munroe.

Munroe said the industry depends on a few factors.

"I think it goes by area, last year we did sell quite a few bred cows, year before we didn't sell very many. So, market forces play into it and it seems to go in cycles."

Killarney Auction Mart also started some renovations two weeks ago.

"Last year we expanded our parking lot and pens," said Munroe. "This year our focus is trying to improve the flow through the ring."

These new renovations will be completed by the end of September, said Munroe.
