Construction of a new swimming pool in Boissevain is expected to start in August,2022.

The existing pool was constructed more than 50 years ago and needs to be replaced.

Boissevain-Morton Head of Council Judy Swanson says the province gave the municipality just one more year to use the pool. “2022 will be the final year for our swimming pool. We will be building a new pool in 2022 and it will be opening in 2023. We sent out information pamphlets to area residents about recreation in the municipality.”

The information flyer pointed out funding for the multi-million dollar pool has been secured and Boissevain-Morton will not require any municipal borrowing.

Plans are to use the existing change room building.

“The pool will be in the same location as the other one just a little further back. We hope to get through next year if the pool hangs in there. We will start construction in August,2022 and re-open the new pool in August, 2023.”

A recreation open house is set for February 16th where people can have a look at the plans.

“We had the pool sandblasted two years ago and it was discovered the cement was pretty much done. To repair it was astronomical and it’s leaking and this year the province said he was to do a lot of work to keep it going this past summer. We did what we had to do to keep it open for another year” said Judy Swanson.

The municipality recently carried out a recreation/community assessment and Swanson said the swimming pool was actually one of the higher priorities on the survey.

“This past year we had more people than ever using the pool and it was booked solid. With that comes the campground and those spin offs. The pool actually does well financially when you add the camping with it the pool actually breaks even or makes money for the community.”

Judy Swanson says people look to recreation facilities when considering whether or not to move to a community.

“The new pool will be outdoors and accessible with a walk in section and another area to do laps and even some slides so it’s quite exciting.”
