The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added quarterback Justin Goltz to the practice roster. Goltz attended training camp with the Detroit Lions in 2009 and was drafted by the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL in 2010 but was among the team's final cuts. Goltz was a three-year starter at Occidental College and led his team to an undefeated record as a senior. He completed 66% of his passes for 1,832 yards and added 599 yards rushing that year while also throwing for 11 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He led the Tigers to their third SCIAC championship in four seasons. Goltz was named the 2008 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice confirmed that quarterback Steven Jyles will need surgery to repair separated ligaments in his right shoulder.
