We are celebrating our 65th anniversary this week, and we wouldn’t be here without all of you who have been listening for just a few years, or since we came on the air March 13th, 1957.

What is really amazing about our listeners, is over the years they have sent us recordings and copies of their favourite programs from the past, and that’s where we find ourselves today... sharing part of one of those recordings.

About a year ago we received an email from Shannon McFarlane... this is what it said,

“Hello. I have been clearing out my uncle’s Farm, and came across two tapes of the radio magazine program of October 12th, 1968 from your station.  I am happy to send the tapes to you if you are interested."

Considering the age of the tapes, which turned out to be reel to reel, we were very interested in receiving them, and reviewing what was on them.

Flash forward to now, and our 65th anniversary celebration, Golden West Archivist Sandy Hildebrand ever so carefully strung the reel to reels on the player, and began digitizing them. It turns out, what was on those tapes was an appearance by Shannon’s beloved grandfather, Ed Russenholt, who was the author of several books, and probably most well known as CBC Manitoba's first weather person!

He stopped by the studio that October evening to talk about his latest book “Heart of the Continent” with announcer Ray Saunders. Here is an excerpt from that program:

That was an excerpt from the Radio Magazine from October 12th, 1968, one of the many programs we aired in our past.

Again, thank you to Shannon McFarlane for sending these tapes to us, so we could digitize, archive and ultimately share with our listeners as part of our 65th anniversary celebration!

As we look ahead to a very special Morning Show Friday, March 11th we’ll do more reflecting on the past, hearing voices you woke up with for decades, and perhaps a few you haven’t heard in a decade or two.
