It's by-election day in Portage-Lisgar.

Voters head to the polls today to elect the riding's new Member of Parliament following Candice Bergen's resignation from the job earlier this year.

As Matthew McKenna, a spokesperson for Elections Canada, explained, voters must cast their ballot at the designated polling station outlined on their voter registration card that came in the mail in recent weeks. That information can also be found on the Elections Canada web site by typing in your postal code and, McKenna noted, the necessary information will pop up.

But what if you didn't get a voter registration card?

"It's no issue," said McKenna, adding you don't need to be registered in advance in order to cast your ballot. "You can do it right at the polls. So, if folks are worried, they can just show up and speak with one of the poll workers there and, if they're not yet registered, they'll be able to do it there on the spot."

Voting stations open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 8:30 p.m.

Candidates in the running, listed in order according to the Elections Canada website, are:

Max Bernier representing the People's Party of Canada; Nicolas Geddert for the Green Party of Canada; Branden Leslie for the Conservative Party of Canada; Kerry Smith for the Liberal Party of Canada and Lisa Tessier-Burch for the New Democratic Party.

McKenna explains, workers at each location will begin tallying the votes as soon as the polls close.

The polls close at 8:30pm Monday, June 19th, and vote counting will begin after that.
