While some have speculated, we could be in for a federal election in 2023 that isn’t what Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire is thinking.

The last election happened in September of 2021 when the Liberals won a minority government “Most minority government’s last anywhere from 18 to 24 months so traditionally that would mean and election this spring or fall but I don’t think it will happen.”

Larry Maguire points to the agreement between the Liberals and NDP to keep the minority government in power until 2025.

“I don’t see any election this because those two parties signed that agreement to keep the government propped up until the next election but if Mr. Trudeau wants to go to the polls; he can find a way to break the deal and take voters to the polls.”

Maguire adds no party wants to lead in a minority situation. “Trudeau has to sign the deal and agree to spend more money to appease the NDP. I’m not saying some of those things aren’t needed but we’re already in an overspending by the Liberal government.”

Maguire points the auditor general who said 40 per cent of expenditures that were supposed to go to fight covid didn’t and that total around $200 billion. “That’s a huge cost to the government and is certainly one of the factors behind the rising inflation.”
