Justice critic Kelvin Goertzen wants the NDP government to make a final decision on GPS monitoring of chronic offenders and high-risk car thieves.

The Steinbach MLA says the electronic ankle bracelets have proven effective and it's time the government made a decision to keep the program in use on a permanent basis. Goertzen believes it has had some good results, noting some car thieves have been thwarted by it.

He says the government has been reviewing the program and has been calling it an interim plan for the last 4 years. Goertzen adds the government claims to have commissioned a report that was supposed to be finished about 6 months ago. He just wants the government to make a decision to make the monitoring program permanent. He feels, if done properly, it can reduce criminal activity.

Goertzen adds the best place for high-risk car thieves is in jail, but if they are in the community, the next best thing is around-the-clock monitoring.
