Dylan Guenther scored his second goal 6:22 into overtime to lift Canada past Czechia 3-2 in the gold medal game at the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax. Shane Wright also scored for the Canadians who won the World Juniors for the second year in a row. Jiri Kulich and Jakub Kos scored less than a minute apart in the latter half of the third period for Czechia to even the game at 2-2. Connor Bedard, who had 23 points in seven games, was named tournament MVP. Winnipeg Jets prospect Chaz Lucius scored his third goal in overtime to lift the United States past Sweden 8-7 in the bronze medal game. The 2024 World Junior Hockey Championship will be held in Sweden.


Josh Morrissey has been selected to participate in the 2023 NHL All-Star Game. The Winnipeg Jets defenseman leads the hockey club and is fifth in the NHL with 36 assists, while his 23:20 time-on-ice per game and plus-12 rating pace Winnipeg. His 43 points ranks second only to Kyle Connor. Among NHL defencemen, Morrissey is tied for the most game-winning goals (4) and overtime markers (2) and he ranks second in points (43), even-strength points (27), and assists (36). The 27-year-old Calgary native is enjoying a breakout season and has already set new single-season career highs in points (43), assists (36), powerplay points (16), and game winning goals (4). He also set a franchise record with an 11-game assist streak from December 4th-22nd. This will be Morrissey’s first NHL All-Star Game appearance after Kyle Connor was the Jets representative at the 2022 All-Star Game in Las Vegas. The 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend is being hosted by the Florida Panthers February 3rd-4th.


The head of the International Ice Hockey Federation said Thursday that he would like a decision on NHL participation in the 2026 Olympics in Italy by the spring of 2024. Luc Tardif told reporters at the World Junior Championship in Halifax that would give the parties involved two years to prepare for the Games in Milan and Cortina. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly tells The Associated Press it's likely a reasonable timeline to make that call.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed all-star offensive tackle Stanley Bryant to a one-year extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent in February. The Goldsboro, North Carolina native returns in 2023 for what will be his eighth season with the Blue Bombers and 13th in the Canadian Football League. Bryant added to his legacy as one of the most decorated linemen in Blue Bombers and CFL history in 2022 in being honoured as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman for a record fourth time while also being selected to the CFL All-Star team for a seventh time. Bryant has been a mainstay on the left side of the Blue Bombers offensive line since first signing with the club as a free agent in 2015. Bryant, who had dressed for 186 games in his CFL career, including the last 120 in Winnipeg, is three-time Grey Cup champion, having won in 2019 and 2021 with the Blue Bombers and 2014 with Calgary.


The NFL will not resume the Bills-Bengals game that was suspended Monday night in Cincinnati after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest on the field. The league said some of the factors in coming to its decision included the fact that not playing the game wouldn't have an effect on any team qualifying for the post-season or being eliminated from playoff contention.
