Jace Freeman of the Virden Curling Club and Dayna Wahl of the Altona Curling Club will compete at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Summerside, Prince Edward Island after winning the Manitoba Trials Sunday at the Heather Curling Club in Winnipeg. Freeman, with third Elias Huminicki, second Rylan Graham and lead Jack Steski got four in the fifth end en route to a 7-5 victory over Ronan Peterson of the Heather. Wahl along with third Piper Stoesz, second Anna Marie Ginters and lead Gillian Hildebrand stole two in the eighth end and defeated Shaela Hayward of Carman 6-5. The Canada Winter Games will be held February 18th - March 5th. 


The Stonewall Rams beat the host Bears 25-20, 22-25, 15-13 in the final of the Virden varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Hamiota Huskies defeated the MacGregor Mustangs 25-17, 23-25, 15-8 in the final of the Carberry junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Elton Sabres beat the Baldur/Cartwright Cougars 25-19, 25-17 in the final of the Killarney Raiders varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Beliveau Barracudas 7-2 in the final of the Neepawa Tigers High School Hockey Tournament. 


In the Westman High School Hockey League - Kyle O'Connor had two goals and four assists and Logan Gudnason had a hat trick as the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders defeated Swan Valley 7-5; Owen Chubka made 31 saves in the Dauphin Clipppers 3-2 victory over Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair; Porter Ewert had a hat trick as the Vincent Massey Vikings downed Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson 6-2; Colbey Reichmuth had three goals and an assist as the defending champion Major Pratt Trojans beat Minnedosa/Erickson 8-1 and Coby Asseltine had three goals and two assists as Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn blanked Crocus Plains 10-0. Falcons netminder Dane Pearson made 22 saves in recording the shutout. 


Nicholas Cullen scored three times as the Southwest Cougars defeated the Norman Northstars 5-3 in Souris. Jack Clark and Sebastian Stone also scored for the Cougars who led 2-1 and 5-1 at the period breaks. Southwest netminder Evan Svoboda made 24 saves.


The Winnipeg Jets three-game road trip came to an end Sunday night. Jack Eichel scored with seven seconds left in overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past Winnipeg 2-1. Adam Lowry scored 13 seconds into the third period to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Mark Stone got the equalizer seven minutes later. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 46 saves. The Jets begin a three-game homestand Thursday when they face the Montreal Canadiens. 


Leon Gawanke and Cole Maier scored 15 seconds apart in the second period as the Manitoba Moose downed the Iowa Wild 4-1 at Canada Life Centre. Maier finished the game with a pair of goals. Wyatt Bongiovanni also scored for Manitoba.  Arvid Holm made 33 saves.
